September 23, 2009For the past 40 years the Libyan people have endured a government characterized by erratic domestic policy, reckless experimentation, official corruption, and the brutal repression of peaceful dissent. Under threat of imprisonment, torture, and execution, we were forced to witness the precipitous decline of our great nation, one that was once looked upon as an inspiration for the rest of the Arab world. While these policies have effectively robbed our nation of a generation of progress, a new era is upon us. In musing about the creation of this organization and its mission statement, I can't help but be struck by the subtle irony of the name itself—Enough Gaddafi—for it is acutely emblematic of the central tragedy of the Libyan experience over the past forty years: namely, that no matter how much the majority of its citizens (and certainly those of us who make up the Libyan diaspora) might wish, the Libyan people have been unable to separate their lives, their image in the world, or even their collective identity from Moammar al-Gaddafi. Learning that his Farther might be Alive

Three years ago I started writing a novel about a man haunted by the absence of his father. He stalks his lovers, lives in his houses and wears his clothes. He is a most faithful son. And now, weeks from finishing that novel, I learn that my father, who disappeared 20 years ago, might be alive. Someone saw him in a secret political prison in Tripoli. "He is well. Frail, but well," was the man's message. He saw my father in 2002, but only recently was he able to send me the message. This is tremendous news. Tremendous in the way a storm or a flood can be tremendous.

Libya appears to be a hot target for business today. The catch-phrase that can be heard in Libyan business circles nowadays is 'now is the time to make money in Libya.' If GDP numbers told the whole story, those who believe this saying can rightfully replace 'caution' with 'urgency' as the correct attitude by which to approach business in Libya. Of course, it would be a mistake to do such a thing anywhere, but especially Libya and especially now, as the material rewards make it tempting to ignore some of the immense risks of investing in Libya. These risks should be impossible to ignore in light of the ongoing diplomatic mess between Libya and Switzerland, which simply highlight just how unpredictable Gaddafi Inc. can be.
